Animal Haven rescues puppies from closed mill; hoarder

Animal Haven recently rescued 21 puppies and dogs (mostly Cocker Spaniels and Chihuahuas) from a state-closed puppy mill and a suspected animal hoarder.  Over the past 30 days, the no-kill shelter has rescued a total of 39 dogs and one cat from similar situations in Central and Western Kansas.

“Animal Haven plays an active role in the effort to save abused, neglected, and abandoned dogs and cats.  We routinely accept animals who are malnourished, injured, and afraid – animals who might not have a chance at another facility.  Because of this work, we are often one of the first shelters the state calls upon when they need to find a home for these pets,” said Teresa Johnson, Animal Haven Executive Director.

The most recent dogs, nine 10-week-old Cocker Spaniels, four Chihuahua puppies, and five adult Chihuahuas, have been assessed by Animal Haven’s medical team, have been vaccinated, micro-chipped and are in the process of being spayed or neutered.  Most will be available for adoption this Saturday.  There are also several Italian Greyhounds and Rat Terriers who came from a similar situation.

Animal Haven receives no payment for taking in these rescued animals from the state, so monetary donations are urgently needed to help cover the cost of their care.

“These pets came from very bad conditions, and many required extensive treatment for skin allergies, eye surgeries – even leg amputations – that further stretch the resources of our non-profit animal shelter.  However, we felt compelled to save them from the deplorable and dangerous living conditions,” said Johnson.

Donations are urgently needed to help care for these dogs.  They can be dropped off at Animal Haven’s Lost Pet Center, located at 9827 W. 67th Street in Merriam, between 11:00am and 6:30 p.m. daily.

  1. I am saddened more everyday when I watch the news, get on CNN, or even my own Facebook page, where I have ASPCA and the Humane Society as friends and the the daily posts of animal cruelty. I have been seriously considering getting a “friend” for my lab/beagle mix, Piper, and I think the time may have finally come. See you guys this weekend!

  11. The cocker spaniel and chihuahua puppies will be available on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. If you’re very interested, I would suggest getting to the shelter early – based upon the interest we’ve already received, there are a lot of people interested in adopting (tomorrow morning it will be first come, first serve).

  13. I would like to adopt a small chihuahua, either long or short hair but want a puppy or very young adult. I also would consider a small yorkshire terrier. It would be the only dog and constant companion. I have a home with a fenced yard. This would be a forever home for the dog. Please put me on a waiting list if you have no such animal at this time.

  17. I have two adorable long har Chihuahuas. One male named Copper and a female named Buttercup. I would love to adopt one of the baby Chihuahuas. We have a fenced in yard and they are inside the house unless they need to go outside to do their duty and in the summertime we love to go outside a play.

    Best Regards,
    Melissa and Boris

  29. Congrats, Lisa! Abby is such a sweetheart! I took her on Fox 4 on Saturday morning, and she was very well-behaved.

PS – I met your husband and son that morning and they were kind enough to handle opening and closing the gates for me several times – thanks again for their kindness!

  37. Stephanie: We adopted Cody (“Tyler” when he was at Animal Haven), our terrier/schnauzer mix from Animal Haven last July and just love him. We’re looking for a similar sized terrier mix or really any sweet dog who might be a companion for Cody. Of course we’ll bring him with us to make sure they get along. Do you have any smaller type Terriers we could look at . .. we don’t want anything as small as a chihuaha and we’re not sure if male/female is better or male/male? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
