Animal Haven Staff, Board Member to Serve as ASPCA First Responders in Tornado-Battered Arkansas

StormFriday, April 29, 2011

Two members of the Animal Haven staff and one board member left Kansas City this morning to assist with the ASPCA’s pet search and rescue efforts in Conway, Arkansas, a town just North of Little Rock that was heavily damaged by Wednesday’s tornadoes.

While in Arkansas, the team will be sent out into the storm-affected areas to search for lost or stray pets and bring them into the safety of the local emergency animal shelter.  Animal Haven staff will also help care for the animals until they are able to be reunited with their owners.

The trip comes while preparations are underway for this weekend’s Spring Adopt-a-thon, one of Animal Haven’s biggest annual events.

“As one of the largest shelters in Kansas City, we work hard to help every animal in our community live a happy, healthy life.  A part of that is providing care and comfort to locally displaced dogs and cats while they wait to go back home, so this role is a natural extension of that mission.  When the ASPCA called, we felt strongly that we needed to do all that we could within our limited resources to assist the persons and pets dealing with this tragedy,” said Teresa Johnson, Animal Haven CEO/Executive Director.

The Animal Haven team is expected to remain in Arkansas through the weekend.
