Animal Haven Rescues 38 Dogs and Cats from Overcrowded Shelters

Joplin Transfer DogThis week, Animal Haven rescued 27 dogs and 11 cats from the Joplin and Lawrence Humane societies.

“We’re happy to have such strong relationships with several other local humane societies,” Animal Haven’s Chief Executive Officer Teresa Johnson said.  “It allows us to utilize our vacant space to rescue animals that might otherwise run out of time at another shelter.”

Recent Animal Haven adoption success has permitted an influx of transfers from local organizations, including those that euthanize due to overcrowding.  Since January, Animal Haven has taken in 274 animals from high-kill shelters.

“Every pet should have the opportunity to have a safe, lifelong home,” Johnson said.  “Our work with other shelters allows more pets to have that opportunity.”

The transfer dogs include Papillons, Poodle, Terrier, and Hound mixes.  Every pet has been assessed by our medical team and will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated.  Many of the transferred animals will be available for adoption by this weekend.

Can’t open your home for a new pet?  Open your heart with a charitable contribution! New or gently used dog beds, fleece blankets or financial contributions will help cover the costs of providing for these pets.  View our full wish list here!

McGeehan Family WEBThe McGeehan Family honored Virginia Tech shooting victim Nicole Regina White by planting a blooming crabapple tree on Saturday at Animal Haven’s Adoption Center.

According to Virginia Tech’s remembrance website, Nicole Regina White was a junior at Virginia Tech, majoring in international studies with a minor in political science.

Nicole was described as a giving person who was an active volunteer at both her local animal shelter and the battered women’s shelter.

White’s aunt, uncle and family wanted to recognize her passion for animals by honoring her life with the Animal Haven remembrance tree.

The tree will provide joy and shade at Animal Haven for many years to come – thank you!
